Sinayoko Ended Us. Here's the Honest Post-Mortem.

Lassine Sinayoko scored in the first minute, scored again in the 19th, then came back in the 86th to convert a VAR-confirmed penalty and seal it. Three goals, one man, and our Marseille home win call was gone before the final whistle had even dried.

We got the match wrong. Here is exactly how and why.

What We Called and What Landed

The good news first: four markets hit cleanly. Over 2.5 goals, a first-half goal, a second-half goal, both sides to score. Five goals were scored. Both sides found the net. The game was open, attacking, and multi-goal throughout. All of that read correctly.

These two put seven goals in their last meeting. I'd almost go over 2.5, but over 1.5 is where the real conviction lives.

She was right, and the five-goal total vindicated every part of that read. The head-to-head had already told us these sides do not keep it tight.

But three markets missed, and two of them hurt badly. We called goals to land in the 1-4 band: they landed at five. We called home or draw at half time: Paris FC were 2-1 up at the break. And the headline miss was the result itself, Marseille to win, which finished 2-3 to the visitors.

The Moment That Changed Everything

Sinayoko put Paris FC ahead inside 60 seconds. That scoreline, 1-0 away after one minute, immediately rewrote the shape of the game. Amine Gouiri pulled Marseille level at eight minutes, but Sinayoko struck again at 19, and Paris FC went into the break 2-1 up. Our half-time read, which expected Marseille level or ahead, was already wrong.

First halves are cautious in Ligue 1. I'd expect Marseille to be level or ahead at the break, not behind. The away half-time lead is what I'm excluding.

Excluding it was the mistake. Sinayoko's pace and directness on the break punished Marseille twice in the first 20 minutes, and the half-time scoreline reflected that ruthlessness, not caution.

Gouiri levelled again at 53 minutes on an assist from Amine Harit, and for a spell the Marseille home win looked like it might still come. But Moses Simon won a penalty in the 83rd minute, VAR confirmed it, and Sinayoko stepped up at 86 to make it 3-2. His hat-trick was complete. A yellow card one minute later summed up the chaos of the closing stages.

Without that VAR penalty, this is a 2-2 draw with two of our markets still missed but the headline call surviving in spirit. Football does not deal in almost, though. The penalty was given, Sinayoko scored it, and Paris FC took all three points.

What the Data Still Tells Us

We underestimated how dangerous Paris FC are on the counter with Sinayoko leading the line. Their three clean sheets and defensive solidity were real, but so is their ability to hurt you on the break in ways that do not always show up in possession or xG numbers. That 3-0 win over Nice at the start of the season was not a fluke.

Marseille scored twice through Gouiri and showed genuine attacking quality. But going behind inside a minute is a brutal test, and the game never fully recovered its shape for the home side.

Paris FC are the real deal in Ligue 1 this season. We will not be caught underrating them again.
