We Called It: Croatia Edge Czechia 2-1 in Nations League Opener
Exact score, over 2.5 goals, Croatia to score and more. Tom and Sheila nailed this one front to back, with one honest miss on the first half.

Croatia edged Czechia 2-1 in their Nations League opener, and we had the exact scoreline locked in 24 hours before kick-off. Seven markets called, six landed. Here is how it played out.
The Headline Call: 1-2, Exact
The most satisfying tick on the board is always the exact score, and this one came in cleanly. We went 1-2 for Croatia, and 1-2 is what we got.
The reasoning was straightforward: Croatia's attacking quality gave them the edge in expected output, but Czechia had enough going forward through Patrik Schick and Tomáš Souček to nick one on the counter. A narrow away win was the call, and a narrow away win is what happened.
Tom
Poisson has 1-1 as the single likeliest score at 12%, then 1-2 at 9.4%. Croatia's xG of 1.63 is meaningfully higher than Czechia's 1.24.
Sheila
And Croatia have Modrić pulling the strings plus Kramarić finishing. Czechia will make this scrappy but I don't see them keeping Croatia out.
The 0-0 from their October 2025 qualifier gave Tom a moment's pause. Sheila pushed back, pointing out the different pressure and context of a Nations League fixture, and she was right. Croatia were the more expansive side and punished Czechia on the night.
What Landed, and What Did Not
Six markets hit. Goal in the second half, over 2.5 goals, goals landing between one and four, Croatia to score, a clean half for the away side, and the half-time result all came in. The half-time draw fell neatly on the right side of our away-or-draw call, and Croatia's defensive organisation kept Czechia scoreless in one of the two halves, exactly as we argued it would.
Sheila
This one's easy. Both teams have attacking quality, Czechia leak goals, and second halves always open up.
The one miss was the first-half goal market, where we called yes at low conviction. The game was locked at 0-0 at the break, which is the one outcome that hurt. To be honest about it, we flagged the cagey-opening risk ourselves. The October qualifier was a 0-0, and Czechia's low shot volume was always a drag on first-half scoring probability. We called it yes but said it quietly, and the match confirmed we were right to hesitate.
Nothing else to apologise for. We owned the miss in the preview framing and we will take it here too.
What It Means Going Forward
Croatia's attacking output in this Nations League cycle is real. Fifteen goals in their last six going in, and they backed that up against a side that is, on paper, one of the stronger teams they will face in this group. The defensive shape held for long enough to win the match, even with Czechia eventually getting their goal.
For Czechia, the concern is structural. They do not dominate possession, they live on transitions, and against better-organised sides that will keep getting harder. Schick and Souček remain genuine threats, but one goal from limited chances is not going to be enough to compete for Nations League standing if the defensive numbers do not improve.
Croatia look like the team to beat in this group. We said it before kick-off and three points later, we are saying it again.
